Door Dimensions Measurement Guide
Use a tape measure to find the width of the door opening.
- Add extra width (typically 2–3 inches on each side) to ensure the door fully covers the opening when closed.
Example: If your doorway is 36 inches wide, a door width of 40–42 inches is ideal.
- Measure from the floor to the top of the door opening.
- Add 2–3 inches above the opening for clearance and the track system.
Example: If your opening height is 82 inches, a door height of 84–85 inches works best.
- Barn doors slide to the side, so you need wall space at least equal to the width of the door next to the doorway.
- Example: For a 40-inch-wide door, you need a 40-inch clear wall on one side.
To install a barn door properly, adequate clearance is required between the top of the door and the ceiling.
- Minimum required clearance: 6 inches
- Recommended clearance: 7–8 inches for smooth installation and long-term use
- Always measure twice to ensure accuracy.
- Incorrect measurements may affect door fit and functionality.
Tip: If your floor is uneven, measure from the highest point of the floor to the top of the opening to avoid clearance issues.
